Aragonite is a fascinating mineral that belongs to the carbonate group. It's a crystalline form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), distinct from calcite, despite sharing the same chemical composition. What sets aragonite apart is its orthorhombic crystal structure.
The crystals of aragonite often appear as columnar or acicular (needle-like) formations and can be found in a variety of colors, including white, gray, green, blue, and brown. This mineral forms in diverse geological environments, including caves, where it contributes to the creation of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as hot springs and sedimentary deposits.
Aragonite also plays a significant role in the biological realm. For example, it's a major component of the shells of many mollusks and corals, and the internal structures of some other marine creatures.
Due to its less stable structure compared to calcite, aragonite tends to transform into calcite over time under certain conditions of temperature and pressure.
